Knowing God for Yourself

In a world filled with voices—some wise, others misguided—it’s essential to remember that no one person, church, or ministry holds a monopoly on truth.
Spiritual maturity involves humility, discernment, and a personal pursuit of truth grounded in God’s Word. While we are enriched by the insights of faithful teachers, our ultimate allegiance is not to personalities or platforms—but to Christ alone. We are called to be like the Bereans, who examined the Scriptures for themselves to confirm what they had heard.
It is a sacred privilege to learn about God through those who have walked closely with Him and carry the weight of deep spiritual experience. Their wisdom can guide us. Yet, the greater invitation remains: to know God for ourselves.
Through Jesus Christ, the living Word, and the Holy Spirit, God calls us and has made it possible for us to have a personal, transformative relationship with Him. There is no greater joy than knowing Him for ourselves. This is the essence of faith: not about second-hand knowledge, but a first-hand encounter with the living God. He does not desire mere ritual or routine—He desires relationship and intimacy.
One of the most beautiful truths about our relationship with God is that we come to know Him just as we would anyone else—through time, presence, and shared moments. As we get to know Him, our trust begins to grow. As trust deepens, we learn to rely on Him more fully. That reliance gives birth to true commitment. And out of that commitment flows a profound intimacy. This is the journey God invites us into—not religion, but relationship. Not distance, but closeness. He wants to be known, and He welcomes us into a deeper knowing.
This is the joy of personal faith.
If we’re not on a personal faith journey with our Heavenly Father, then no amount of corporate worship or religious activity will truly satisfy or transform us.
Religion can provide structure. Corporate worship can offer encouragement. But neither can substitute for the daily, personal, intimate relationship God desires with each of us. Without that personal connection, even the most passionate worship or well-orchestrated services can become hollow routines—motions without meaning.
This is why knowing Him for ourselves matters. When corporate worship is an overflow of personal devotion, it becomes powerful. But without that personal faith, we risk mistaking spiritual busyness for spiritual intimacy.
God is not merely calling us to attend services or follow traditions. He is calling us to Himself—to walk with Him, to know His voice, to trust His heart, and to experience His presence in the quiet corners of our lives.
Our spiritual life is not sustained by proximity to people of faith, but by personal communion with the Living God.
Key Scriptures
Jeremiah 9:23–24 (NLT)
“This is what the Lord says: ‘Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord who demonstrates unfailing love and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and that I delight in these things. I, the Lord, have spoken!’”
John 17:3 (NLT)
“And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.”
Philippians 3:8–10 (NLT)
“Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord... I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead.”
James 4:8 (NLT)
“Come close to God, and God will come close to you.”
Psalm 25:14 (NLT)
“The Lord is a friend to those who fear him. He teaches them his covenant.”
John 15:15 (NLT)
“I no longer call you slaves... Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me.”
God has never desired religion without relationship. He longs to be known by you. As you draw near, He will draw near. As you open your heart, He will reveal His. You were created for connection, and the greatest joy of life is to know God—not just through others, but for yourself.
Reflection Questions
1. Where am I in my personal journey with God? Have I been relying mostly on others' experiences, or am I actively seeking to know Him for myself?
2. What moments in my daily life can I intentionally set aside to deepen my relationship with God? (Think about morning routines, walks, journaling, worship, or quiet moments.)
3. What areas of my life am I struggling to trust God with? What would it look like to invite Him into those places?
4. How is my current level of reliance and commitment to God shaping the intimacy I experience with Him? Is there anything distracting me from greater commitment?
5. What does “knowing God” look like in my season of life right now? How might God be inviting me to go deeper?
